Weight

Concept Explanation

Weight

 The Earth attracts all bodies towards its centre. The force exerted by the Earth on a body is called the weight of the body. This force acts towards the centre of earth that is in vertically downward direction. It is an example of non contact force , even if the an object is not in contact with the Earth, the Earth pulls it.  The weight of an object having the mass as “m”, placed on the surface of earth, is given by the relation

Weight ;(W):=:mtimes:g

where g= acceleration due to gravity

            =9.8 m/sec^2 ;or ;10m/sec^2

Due to low gravitational  force on the moon. The acceleration due to gravity on Moon is one sixth of the acceleration due to gravity of Earth. Thus the weight of a person on moon is  frac{1}{6}  of the weight on the earth.

Illustration:  A person has a mass as 70 kg, while the acceleration due gravity on Earth is  9.8:m/s^2. Find out the weight of this person?

Solution: Here, mass(m) = 70 kg and g = 9.8:m/s^2

As we know that  weight  (w):=:mtimes:g Therefore,                         w:= :70times9.8

Hence, the weight of the person  =   686 N

Illustration: An individual weighs 250 N on the moon. Calculate the mass of the individual .

Solution: Here, w = 250 N  and acceleration due to gravity(g')  on moon =   frac{g}{6}:=:1.6:m/s^2

                As we know

  W:=:mtimes:g            Therefore,

          m:=:frac{W}{g}

         m:=:frac{250}{1.6}

         m:= 156.25:kg
